A Lunar New Year Morning at a Massive Bakery Cafe

It was Lunar New Year morning, and we had some time to kill before visiting family, so I pulled out my phone and started searching for cafes in Cheongju — a mid-sized city about two hours south of Seoul. After scrolling through a bunch of options, one place caught my eye: Ean Terrace Cafe. The photos made it look huge, and the vibe seemed great. A lot of places were closed for the holiday, but this bakery cafe was open, so we headed straight there. I honestly expected it to be packed — holidays and all — but when we arrived, it was surprisingly quiet. Everyone was probably still at home doing New Year's bows with their families. Lucky us. We got to wander around freely and take everything in. So, was this place really as good as its hype suggested? Let me give you the honest rundown.

The Building and Parking at Ean Square

When we pulled up, the scale of this place blew me away. I was expecting a regular neighborhood cafe, but nope — the entire building with the big "EANSQUARE" sign on it? That's all one complex. There's a banner at the entrance that says "Welcome to Ean Square," and you can see the parking garage going into the building. Just from the parking lot alone, you could tell this wasn't your average cafe. Turns out the building doesn't just house a cafe — it's a whole multi-purpose complex with a wedding hall and restaurant too. That's why the parking is so generous, spread across the second and third floors. Even on a holiday, finding a spot was absolutely zero stress.

Cafe Entrance and the Bakery Walkthrough

We arrived on the fourth floor and stepped inside, and the first thing that hit me was the bakery display. Round pendant lights hung softly from the ceiling, and natural light poured in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, making everything feel bright and airy. The layout here is pretty clever — most cafes have the counter right at the entrance or the bread tucked somewhere in the middle, right? But here, you walk past the entire bakery lineup before you even get to the register. It's designed to make you browse the bread first. And honestly? It works. I had no intention of buying anything, but my eyes kept wandering. There was a wedding photo zone off to the right, and the whole space had this clean, polished feel to it.

Bakery Showcase Up Close

Getting up close to the bakery display, I could see the curved glass showcase was absolutely packed with bread. And what you see here isn't even everything — there's a whole other side with just as many options. If you're a bread person, this place would make you ridiculously happy. The variety was incredible, and everything looked so fresh that I wanted to grab one of each.

Signature Bread Lineup at Ean Terrace

Croissants and Egg Tarts

The croissants were sitting on a cooling rack, clearly just out of the oven. You can see those beautiful flaky layers, right? They had that fresh-baked sheen that just made them look irresistible.

Egg tarts and croissants were lined up next to each other. See that caramelized top on the egg tarts? You could tell they'd just come out of the oven.

These are pain au chocolat with tightly layered pastry. They've got chocolate tucked inside, and the deep color suggested a really rich flavor.

This croissant had some kind of green filling swirled through it. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it had this gorgeous glossy sheen — definitely fresh out of the oven.

Corn Mayo Bread, Scones, and Other Unique Bakes

This one had bacon edges loaded with cheese and corn, with parsley sprinkled on top. Just from the looks alone, you could tell it was savory and delicious.

This was a bread made with dark-colored dough, topped with arugula and cherry tomatoes. The black dough gave it a really eye-catching, unique look.

The Complete Salt Bread Collection

These are salt bread rolls sprinkled with black sesame. You can see the white salt crystals on top and the layers are really well-defined. The dark dough made them stand out.

Plump plain soft bread rolls displayed in a wooden box with a label sign | 하이제이에스비

See the little sign that says "Plain Soft Bread"? The salt bread rolls were displayed in wooden boxes, and every single one of them looked perfectly plump and pretty.

Mocha Salt Bread and Chocolate Salt Bread

This is the mocha salt bread — it has this purple-ish dough with salt sprinkled on top, and one of them had a yellow filling peeking through. The color was so unique it immediately caught my eye.

Chocolate dough salt bread with golden filling and well-defined layers | 하이제이에스비

Brown chocolate dough with a hint of golden filling showing through. The layers were really defined and the surface had a nice glossy sheen.

Honestly, there were way more varieties of bread than what I've shown here. Croissants, tarts, sandwich loaves, sandwiches, cakes — the selection was massive. But if I photographed every single one, this post would go on forever, so I'll stop here. If you're curious to see more, check the cafe info section at the bottom for their full bread lineup.

Window Seats Inside the Cafe

Tables lined the floor-to-ceiling windows all along one side. The wooden chairs had cushions on them, and you could see the terrace outside through the glass. The natural light coming in was incredible — visiting during the day would give you such a great atmosphere. The walkway from the bakery section into the main seating area was wide and the ceilings were high, so it never felt cramped at all. The spacing between tables was generous too, so you could sit comfortably without feeling crowded.

Potted plants throughout the wide seating area with group table options | 하이제이에스비

Past the bakery and deeper inside, this enormous main seating area opened up. The ceilings were high, natural light streamed in through the glass walls, and the sense of openness was unreal. White tables and chairs were spaced out generously, and there were larger tables too — definitely enough room for group gatherings. Some sections had plants hanging from the ceiling in clusters, and potted plants were scattered everywhere, giving the whole space more of a botanical garden vibe than a typical cafe. It looked even more spacious because it was a holiday and almost empty, but I could imagine it getting pretty busy on a regular weekday.

Outdoor Terrace Seating

Glass-roofed outdoor terrace with white tables and sofa seating | 하이제이에스비

Walk all the way through the cafe and you'll reach the outdoor terrace. The building has an open center, so you get a wide-open view of the sky, and sunlight pours in through the glass roof. White tables and chairs are spread out with plenty of room, and there are sofa seats too for a more relaxed feel. That said, it was winter when we visited, so sitting outside was a bit too cold. When the weather warms up though, coming back to sit on the terrace would be amazing. It's outdoor seating but with a roof overhead, so you get the sunshine without the wind — best of both worlds.

Final Thoughts on This Bakery Cafe Visit

Ean Terrace Cafe in Cheongju turned out to be way more impressive than I expected for a Lunar New Year morning stop. The place is massive and the bakery selection is incredibly diverse — if you're a bread lover, it's basically paradise. The salt bread alone comes in plain, mocha, and chocolate varieties, so you've got plenty to choose from. The seating areas are spacious with tons of natural light, making it perfect for a relaxing daytime cafe session. The outdoor terrace is another bonus — I'd love to come back when the weather's nicer. It was peaceful on the holiday, which made for easy browsing, but I bet it gets pretty crowded on regular days. If you're looking for a large-scale bakery cafe in the Cheongju area, this spot won't let you down.
