Modern Korean Cafe Review | Spacious Bagel Spot with Instagram-Worthy Design
I was browsing cafes to visit over the weekend when I stumbled upon this place called 'PETRA' in Cheongju. It's a bit of a drive, but after seeing all the reviews online, I was totally hooked. Korea has so many large-scale cafes these days, but this one's apparently famous for their bagels.
As a bagel lover, I couldn't pass this up. So I made the trip out there over the weekend.
First Impressions - Stunning Night Exterior

I arrived at night and the PETRA sign was lit up huge. The whole place is floor-to-ceiling glass, so you can see straight inside—and yeah, it was pretty packed. Just from the outside, I was already getting hyped.
Spacious Parking & Easy Access

The parking lot is way bigger than I expected. Even during evening hours, finding a spot was no problem at all. So many cafes have tiny parking lots where you end up circling forever, but not here.
Looking at the whole building—two stories, all glass—even at night the vibe was just really nice. The lighting's all warm-toned, so it looks cozy from outside, and you can see people on both floors. I was like, "okay yeah, this is definitely a popular spot." You can tell just from the exterior why people come here.
Luxury Resort-Style Entrance

The exterior looked so good I had to take another photo. At night, with the lighting and glass combined, the atmosphere was just really nice.

Right from the entrance, something felt different. It's wrapped in white wood louvres with lighting from below—honestly felt more like a luxury resort entrance than a cafe. If there wasn't a menu posted on the door, I might've thought it actually was a resort.
Convenient Kiosk Ordering System

When you walk in, you can order at the kiosk. Since hardly anyone carries cash these days, being able to browse the menu on screen at your own pace is nice. They only take cards, which I actually preferred.
But if you need to pay cash or have trouble with kiosks, you can still order at the counter. Nice touch.
PETRA's Bagel Selection - A True Bagel Spot

After ordering, I checked out the bagel display and thought, "yeah, this really is a bagel spot." They've got everything from plain to multigrain loaded with seeds, and pretzel bagels with coarse salt. Pretty solid variety.

The pretzel bagels caught my eye. Shiny brown surface with coarse salt crystals—just from looking at it, you could tell it'd be crispy outside and chewy inside. Even the way they're displayed in baskets looks thoughtful.

The multigrain ones were seriously packed with grains. With so many people looking for healthier bread options these days, seems like they kept that trend in mind when designing the menu.
Overwhelming Space - View from the Second Floor

Looking down from the second floor—this was seriously impressive. The ceiling is super high and there's ambient lighting on each level, so the sense of space is just wild. You can see the entire first floor at a glance, tables are spaced out generously, and there's this big installation piece in the center with plants. Just looking at it puts you in a good mood.

Korean Large-Scale Cafe Culture
There's this big display panel with the PETRA logo and floral graphics—these little details add up to create the whole vibe. The exposed concrete columns, wood louvres, and glass railings all come together for this modern yet warm feel.
Honestly, Korean cafe culture is pretty different from overseas. Abroad, you've got smaller cafes where people mostly grab takeout and go. But in Korea, they build these massive cafes designed for people to sit and stay awhile. PETRA's exactly that kind of Korean-style large cafe—it's not just about getting coffee, it's about experiencing the space itself. I feel like foreigners would be genuinely shocked by the scale. Like, "cafes can be this big?"
High-End Bakery Counter Design

I'm posting the counter photo now, but actually it's right when you walk in. I just shuffled the order a bit lol
The counter design is really nice. Clean marble-look finish with a big monitor showing the menu and queue numbers—doesn't feel like a regular cafe counter, more like an upscale bakery.
Check out the bakery display too. Glass showcases packed with pastries, and the lighting makes everything look even more delicious. From yellow pastries to cakes to sandwiches, the variety is insane.
Instagram Photo Spot - Central Garden Installation

This is honestly the highlight of the cafe. There's this garden installation in the center of the first floor—curved structure made from wood louvres with plants and lighting woven in. The floor's done in gravel and there's even a little chair, so it feels like a tiny garden inside the cafe.

The exposed concrete columns and ambient lighting combined with these natural elements just really bring the space to life. It's a great spot for photos. I grabbed a shot here too—you can definitely get some Instagram-worthy pics.
Variety of Seating - From Hard Chairs to Sofas

The seating comes in different types. The wood chairs with white round tables are clean and modern, but honestly they're a bit hard for sitting long periods. Fine if you're just grabbing a quick coffee, but if you're planning to work or chat for hours, your butt might hurt.

But deeper inside, there are sofa seats with cushions. See those colorful cushioned sofas? Those are plush and comfy for long stays. If you're planning to work on your laptop or hang out with friends for a while, definitely grab one of those sofa spots.
PETRA's Signature Menu - Tiramisu, Bagel, Latte

Finally, my order arrived. I got the tiramisu cake, a bagel, and a latte—just from the visuals alone, expectations were high.
The tiramisu cake is generously dusted with cocoa powder and topped with thick cream that looks seriously delicious. Even has a little pick with the PETRA logo stuck in it. Took a bite and the cream was rich yet smooth, and the cake base was moist. If you're into tiramisu, you'll be satisfied.
Bagel Spot Status: Confirmed

I got a plain bagel—glossy baked exterior and chewy-looking inside. Actually eating it, the outside was crispy and the inside was perfectly chewy, nailing that signature bagel texture. Yeah, the "bagel spot" reputation is well-deserved.

The latte came in a glass cup with a bunch of sweet cookie sticks stuck in. Looks good and eating it with the latte adds a fun texture. The milk foam was smooth and silky, and the coffee wasn't too strong—mild and smooth, perfect pairing with the desserts.
PETRA Final Thoughts & Visiting Tips
PETRA in one sentence: "the space itself is the content." I went because I heard it was a bagel spot, but the bagels are just the beginning. From the interior to the lighting, seating layout, and central installation—everything's designed intentionally.
The exposed concrete and wood louvre combo creating that modern yet warm feel was especially impressive. The open, spacious vibe typical of large cafes was great, and the view from the second floor was genuinely stunning.
The drinks and desserts exceeded expectations too. The tiramisu cake's cream was rich and smooth, and the bagel lived up to its reputation with perfect texture. The latte was smooth and paired well with the desserts.
The hard chair seating might be uncomfortable for long stays, so if you're planning to be there a while, I'd recommend the sofa seats. Parking is ample, so driving there is totally fine.
If you're ever in the Cheongju area, it's worth going out of your way to visit. Whether you're into cafe tours, bagel lovers, or just want some Instagram-worthy shots, you'll leave satisfied.
