Stunning Rooftop Cafe with Panoramic Night Views | Full Review of OHJI in Cheongju, South Korea
A Cafe Trip from Daejeon to Cheongju — My Visit to OHJI in Suamgol
I live in Daejeon, and honestly, I feel like I've hit up just about every cafe worth visiting here. So lately, I've been branching out to neighboring cities for my cafe fix — and it's been a blast. Today's destination: OHJI, a massive cafe tucked into the Suamgol neighborhood of Cheongju. I stumbled across it online and noticed that the road leading up to Suamgol Mural Village (a popular arts district with painted walls and quirky street art) is lined with some really nice restaurants and cafes. OHJI in particular had a reputation as one of the best spots in Cheongju for night views, so I timed my visit for the evening on purpose.
Cheongju might not be on everyone's radar, but honestly, when it comes to large-scale cafes, it actually has some gems that rival — or even beat — what you'll find in Daejeon. If you're building a Cheongju cafe bucket list, keep reading.

The building catches your eye the moment you pull up. It's a five-story structure, and on the side there's this huge yellow OHJI neon sign that practically glows across the neighborhood. Since I arrived in the evening, the lit-up sign was visible from way down the road. Parking is right in front of the building with plenty of spaces, so no circling the block or stressing about where to leave your car.
Building Size and Parking at OHJI Cafe

Up close, the place is even bigger than I expected. All five floors are dedicated to the cafe, and the rooftop at the very top has parasols and tables already set up for outdoor seating. The first floor is the parking area, and there's more than enough room — even on weekends, you'd probably be fine. The entire building is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, so from outside you can actually see people sitting on every level. With this much space, it's hard to imagine ever being turned away because it's full.

If you're driving, this is what the entrance looks like. Once you park and step out, you'll spot the yellow OHJI logo sign right next to the glass doors — impossible to miss. Walk through the doors and there's an elevator right there. The setup is simple: park on the first floor, hop in the elevator, and head up. I also noticed tactile paving on the ground for accessibility, which was a nice touch showing they've put thought into making the space barrier-free.
Inside OHJI — Interior Design and Seating

Just take the elevator up to the counter floor. Everything is clean and well-maintained, and there's an OHJI information board on the right wall inside the elevator.
The Tea Menu Display and Drink Selection

Step off the elevator and you're immediately greeted by a tea showcase. Right in front of the counter, there's a glass display with actual samples of each tea along with description cards. They have names like "LADY ASH NO.023" with tasting notes so you know exactly what you're getting — super helpful if you're not a tea person. The menu goes well beyond tea, though. I spotted hibiscus punch, grapefruit sparkling, cherry lemon sparkling, banana juice, and kiwi juice among plenty of other options.
Seating Layout and Vibe

The tables are arranged a bit close together, but during off-peak hours it's totally fine. There are a lot of seats overall, so even when it gets busy, there's room for everyone. The window-side tables are the real winners here — with those massive glass walls, you get a full view of downtown Cheongju while you sip your drink. The chairs are on the minimalist side and might feel a bit hard if you're camping out for hours, but the high ceilings keep it from feeling cramped. Overall, the space has a clean, modern cafe aesthetic.
OHJI Bakery Menu — Croissants, Scones, Cookies, and More

Standing in front of the bakery display, the Cheongju skyline stretches out behind the glass right over the pastries. Picking out bread with that view as your backdrop? Instant mood boost. The selection is seriously impressive. Black trays are packed with baked goods — croissants, pastries, scones, cookies, you name it. A yellow cream-topped bread and some chocolate-loaded cookies caught my eye right away. The scones were a generous size too — one would easily be enough. I also spotted croffle-style items (a Korean-style croissant-waffle hybrid) and what looked like cream sandwiches.
Each item has a little name card in front of it, and everything looked freshly baked. The croissants had that glossy, golden sheen, and the scones looked like they'd smell of pure butter. I grabbed some immediately. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind the display, you can see Cheongju's apartment complexes, buildings, and mountains in the distance — so you're literally browsing pastries with a panoramic view.
Cake and Dessert Showcase

The cakes and chilled desserts are in a separate refrigerated showcase. The upper shelf had tiramisu-style cup desserts, while the lower shelf held items like melon bread (a sweet, cookie-crusted bun popular in East Asia), individually wrapped and ready to go.
OHJI Rooftop — Panoramic City Views and a Top Night View Spot

Let's be real — the rooftop is the main reason people come here. Once you get up there, the entire Cheongju skyline unfolds in front of you. Apartment towers, buildings, mountains behind them — it's completely open and unobstructed. It was too cold to sit outside when I went, but come spring, the outdoor tables would be absolutely perfect. Imagine sipping a coffee under a parasol with this view laid out before you — that's about as relaxing as it gets. Cafes with views like this in Cheongju? Not many.
Rooftop Outdoor Seating Setup

The rooftop seating is nicely spaced out. White tables and chairs are arranged with plants scattered in between, giving it a relaxed garden feel. There's also subtle floor lighting that adds a warm glow. On a nice day, having coffee up here would be genuinely wonderful.
OHJI Photo Zone — The Instagram Spot

There's a dedicated photo zone on the rooftop with a big yellow OHJI logo sign. The Cheongju skyline fills in the background behind the letters, so every photo comes out looking incredible. Since I was there in the evening, the sky was shifting through soft sunset colors, which made the shots even prettier. Floor lights add to the vibe, making it easy to nail that moody, aesthetic photo. If you need content for the 'gram, don't skip this spot.
OHJI at Night — The Evening Is When It Really Shines

Once the sun went down, the whole atmosphere shifted. The OHJI logo lit up, the city lights started twinkling behind it, and suddenly it felt like a completely different place from the daytime. Snapping photos with all those glittering building lights in the background? The vibe just hits different. Timing your visit for the evening is absolutely the move.
Honest Review Summary — Is OHJI Worth the Visit?
Bottom line: OHJI is a cafe that lives and dies by its view — and the view delivers. It's genuinely hard to find another cafe in Cheongju with this kind of wide-open panorama of the city. The rooftop photo zone is perfect for getting that one great shot, and the night view didn't disappoint either.
The bakery selection is solid too, with a good variety of croissants, scones, and cookies. The tea display with descriptions made ordering easy even for someone who doesn't know much about tea. Ample parking is another big plus. The chairs are a bit stiff, sure, but when you're staring at a view like that, it honestly doesn't matter much.
If you're taking a day trip from Daejeon to Cheongju, this is a great stop. I'd recommend going in the evening — if you time it around sunset, you get both the daytime panorama and the city lights all in one visit. Planning a Cheongju cafe crawl or just looking for a standout large cafe? Put OHJI on the list.
