Tag1 Cafe in Cheongju, Korea — Honest Review of an 8,900 Sq Ft Aesthetic Photo Cafe

I'm always on the hunt for a new cafe to check out. Don't get me wrong — going back to your favorite spot has its charm, but there's something way more exciting about discovering completely different places. And honestly, sharing new finds and useful info with you guys is one of my favorite things to do. Today's spot did not disappoint. Tag1 is hands-down one of the most aesthetic cafes I've ever walked into, and I've been to a lot.

Tag1 is located along Seongangi Street in Cheongju — a city about two hours south of Seoul. Seongangi is basically Cheongju's main drag: underground shopping arcades, brand-name stores, restaurants, you name it. It's the go-to spot for dates and meetups among locals, and Tag1 is tucked right inside one of those side alleys off the main strip. The cafe spans roughly 8,900 sq ft across a main building and an annex, and it's known for completely overhauling its interior decor every single season. Apparently during Christmas, the entire place transforms into one massive photo zone — and honestly, after seeing what it looks like the rest of the year, I believe it.

Tag1's Night Exterior Hit Different — I Was Speechless Before Even Walking In

The second I arrived at Tag1, the words "oh wow, this place is absolutely unreal" just fell out of my mouth. I visited at night, and the whole building was sparkling and glowing. The big '#1' sign was lit up and visible from down the street, and below it was a festival of colorful lights and decorations. The main building and annex are separate structures, but both were decked out so completely that the whole thing felt like one giant photo op. I imagine it looks totally different in the daytime, but at night the lighting made everything feel almost dreamy — like stepping into a fantasy. "I had no idea a place like this existed in Cheongju" was genuinely my first thought. The exterior alone was overwhelming in the best possible way.

The Outdoor Terrace Looks Like a European Side Street

This is the outdoor terrace area. The white building with its pink-striped awning gave me serious European alley vibes — like you'd stumbled into a cafe in the south of France or something. There are trees planted on the left side, and outdoor tables with patio umbrellas are set up so nicely that on a good weather day, sitting outside with a coffee would be absolutely perfect. See those colorful lanterns hanging on the right? At night they glow softly and add this warm, lovely atmosphere that just makes the whole space feel magical.

The Outdoor Garden Looks Straight Out of a Fairy Tale

This angle gives you the full picture of the outdoor garden, and it's a lot. There's a central fountain with colorful hot air balloon-shaped lights and floral decorations wrapping all the way around it. In the background you can spot a building with 'White Birch' written on it, and to the far right there's a row of outdoor seating. The yellow, pink, and blue lights all twinkling together honestly looked like a scene straight out of a storybook. Among all the cafes in Cheongju, I seriously doubt many have an outdoor garden on this scale — it's genuinely rare.

The Fountain Is Your Best Shot at a Perfect Photo

I moved in closer to get a better shot of the fountain. Water flows down a three-tiered fountain completely surrounded by colorful hot air balloon lights and dense floral arrangements. The building wall behind it is covered in twinkling lights, and a yellow striped awning adds a cheerful pop of color. The water in the fountain itself glows a soft blue, which makes the whole nighttime atmosphere feel even more surreal. There is absolutely no way you leave this fountain without at least one photo you'll actually use.

This shot is from the entrance side. There's an adorable yellow sign that reads 'NEWTRO HOUSE' hanging above the doorway. And on the right, there's a red banner with a pretty prominent notice: "Tag1 store usage policy — photography without purchasing is not permitted." Basically, you have to actually order something to take photos. Which honestly tells you everything — so many people must have been showing up just to snap photos and leave without buying anything. Given how famous this place is as a photo-worthy cafe on Seongangi Street, I totally get why they had to put that rule in place.

I Thought Only the Outside Was Pretty — Then I Walked Inside Tag1

I stepped inside, and honestly? The interior hit just as hard as the exterior — maybe harder. Purple faux cherry blossom trees stretch all the way up to the ceiling, and between the branches hang colorful hot air balloon lights in every shade. Yellow, pink, blue — your eyes genuinely don't know where to look first. The whole interior had this gloriously kitschy, over-the-top vibe. "Wait, is this actually the inside of a cafe?" That thought crossed my mind multiple times. The decorations are a lot — almost too much — but somehow it just works, and it's beautiful. Every claim that the entire store is a photo zone turned out to be completely accurate.

Every Single Detail Has Been Thought Through

Tucked into one corner of the interior is the most adorable little decor nook. Nutcracker figurines, a mini Christmas tree, a carousel music box — all of it crammed together in the best possible way. There are framed prints above and what looks like a miniature village scene on the lower shelf. You can really feel the care and intention that went into each individual piece. It's these small details layered on top of each other that create Tag1's very specific, very distinct aesthetic — and honestly, it's what sets it apart from every other cafe I've been to.

Every Seat Has Its Own Completely Different Vibe

Here's one of the seating areas. Rattan chairs are arranged by the window, with a view of the building across the street. Trailing vines hang down from the ceiling, and a yellow floral-print curtain lines the wall. On the right side there's a red lamp shade and some antique-style furniture. The overall feel is cozy and vintage — the kind of spot where you'd happily sit for two hours nursing a latte and people-watching out the window.

And then this space is a completely different world. Full yellow curtains draped floor to ceiling, pink pendant lights and flower decorations hanging from above, shelves packed with books and trinkets on the wall, and a yellow-and-purple checkered tile floor underfoot. Two pink chairs sit in the middle, and the whole thing is basically one big built-in photo set. If you're here for a date or just want a great shot, you have to grab a seat here — it's one of those spots you'll genuinely regret skipping.

There's a Fountain Inside Too — With an Angel Statue and Everything

Yep, there's a fountain inside the cafe. A three-tiered one with an angel sculpture at the top, blue glowing water in the basin, and little yellow balls floating around in the middle tier. The bottom basin has yellow and pink artificial flowers floating in it. The wall behind is decorated with books and framed artwork, and pink pendant lights hang overhead. Combined with the checkered floor, the whole thing has this gloriously kitschy-but-pretty energy that I keep coming back to when I think about Tag1.

Here's yet another seating area with its own personality. On the left wall there's a faux cherry blossom tree, and on the right there's a white shelf absolutely packed with cute little knick-knacks. You can spot the quote "MAKE YOUR HEART THE PRETTIEST THING ABOUT YOU" on the wall, and the lower shelf has cups and accessories neatly displayed. Purple chairs, checkered tile floor — the whole package. What I love most about Tag1 is that no two seats look the same. You could sit in a different spot every visit and it would feel like a different cafe. It never gets old.

The Yellow Checkered Sofa Seat Is Basically a Guaranteed Great Photo

This is the space with the yellow checkered sofa, and it might be the most photogenic spot in the entire cafe. Colorful hot air balloon lights and floral decorations hang in thick clusters from the ceiling above it. Yellow and pink lights twinkle, artificial flowers and trailing vines cascade downward — it's genuinely over-the-top in the most spectacular way. The area behind the sofa is just as densely decorated. If you sit here and take a photo, it's going to be a great one. Honestly, coming all the way here and not getting this seat would be a real shame.

Tag1's Dessert Lineup Is Almost Too Pretty to Eat

I spent a good amount of time just staring at the dessert display. Cake slices were arranged beautifully on yellow plates — chocolate cake, a pink cream cake, a white cake topped with nuts. The yellow flower petal garnishes really elevated the whole presentation visually. There were small signs in front with the names of each item, and the variety was genuinely impressive.

There were also desserts displayed on purple plates. A square tiramisu-style cake in the back, and two types of roll cake up front — one with cream on top and one in a soft yellow. The contrast between the purple plate and the cake colors was really satisfying to look at, even before touching anything.

Even the Desserts Are Styled Like a Photo Shoot

More desserts over here. On the left, a neat yellow square cake, and on the right, an absolutely adorable cake decorated to look like a peach, complete with a tiny flower on top. The presentation is genuinely cute — it almost looks too pretty to eat. The purple plates make the colors pop even more. Small candles flickering softly underneath added another layer of atmosphere to the display — whoever styled this knew exactly what they were doing.

On the round display plates, multiple cake slices were arranged in a rotating spread — matcha cake, fruit tart, chocolate cake, a cake topped with a little carrot decoration, all sitting together on one plate. The variety here was so good that choosing felt like half the fun. There's talk that Tag1 collaborates with a well-known local pastry chef, and looking at this display, it doesn't seem like an exaggeration at all.

Tag1 cafe cream drink in clear glass with thick white cream and green powder topping | 하이제이에스비

Honest Thoughts on the Drinks at Tag1

My drink finally arrived. It came in a clear glass with a thick layer of white cream piled on top and a pale beige liquid underneath. There was something green — a powder of some kind — lightly dusted over the cream. I honestly wasn't sure exactly what it was. But even just sitting on the table it looked gorgeous, which felt very on-brand for this place.

I got a closer shot of the same drink. At this angle the green powder on top of the cream is a lot more visible. Could be matcha, could be some kind of herb powder — genuinely not sure. The cream was firm enough that you could scoop it with a spoon, and I had a feeling mixing it down into the drink underneath would give you something sweet and velvety. I can't actually remember the exact name of this drink now, but having the photo makes me feel like I'm right back there — which is kind of the whole point of a place like Tag1, isn't it?

Final Verdict on Tag1 Cafe in Cheongju

If I had to sum up Tag1 in one sentence: it's the best cafe in Cheongju for photos, full stop. From the exterior to the very last corner of the interior, every inch of the place is a photo opportunity. All 8,900 sq ft of it felt like one cohesive, giant art installation. The claim that they change the decor every season is absolutely not an exaggeration — and knowing they go even more all-out for Christmas makes me want to come back specifically for that.

Honest caveat: the prices are on the higher side. Drinks run around $4.50 and desserts are roughly $6 to $9. But given the atmosphere, the interior, and the fact that you're practically guaranteed to walk away with great photos, I personally thought it was worth it. It's the kind of place that's perfect for a date, an anniversary, or a special get-together with friends where you want the setting to do some of the work for you.

The one real downside is the parking situation — there is no dedicated parking. You'd need to use the nearby public lot at Cheongju Technical High School or the underground lot at the Urban Regeneration Center, and on weekends those can fill up fast. Weekend afternoons in particular get really crowded, so I'd genuinely recommend coming on a weekday morning or early in the day if you can swing it. On the plus side, it's a no-kids-allowed space, so it stays pretty calm and quiet — great if you just want to sit and enjoy your coffee in peace. And they do allow well-behaved dogs, which is a nice touch for anyone who wants to bring their pup along.

If you're after an aesthetic cafe that takes its interior design seriously, a photo-worthy spot in Cheongju, or just a genuinely memorable place to spend an afternoon — Tag1 is my top recommendation. I'm already thinking about coming back when the season changes just to see what the new decor looks like. And if you ever find yourself near Seongangi Street in Cheongju, you really owe it to yourself to stop in at least once.
