Petra Cafe Cheongju by Day — A Totally Different Vibe

🚨

5th of May 2026 — Children's Day here in Korea. We were heading up to Cheongju to visit my grandmother, and I'd left with Mum and Dad a bit earlier than planned. The wife stayed home to have a rest this time round. We rocked up about an hour ahead of schedule, and just as I was getting out of the car, Dad goes, "Hey, remember that cafe we went to at night last time? Reckon we should see what it's like during the day." He was talking about Petra, a massive cafe in Cheongju — and honestly, I'd been curious about the daytime vibe myself. It'd been ages since I'd gone for a coffee with my parents, so I was pretty keen.

From the moment we walked in, it was clear — this place during the day is an absolute world apart from the nighttime. Strip away the mood lighting and let the natural sunlight flood in, and it genuinely feels like a completely different venue. I've been to a fair few large cafes across Korea, but I've never seen such a dramatic difference between day and night at the same spot.

Day vs Night — Different Feel Right from the Entrance

When we came at night, the illuminated signage really popped and grabbed your attention. But in the daytime, the green Petra logo sits neatly between the white louvres and gives off a much more understated, clean look. Photos come out heaps better in natural light too, no surprise there.

Bakery Display — The Range Is Unreal

Soon as you walk in, there's a long bakery display running along the right side. They've got your standard bagels — pretzel, rice, onion — plus more interesting ones like a six-clove garlic bagel and a corn bagel. The garlic one had this gorgeous butter-garlic aroma wafting right from the display, and Mum walked past and said, "Should we grab one of these to take home?" The corn bagel had whole kernels loaded on top, which made it pretty eye-catching.

Worth noting: the bagels and cream cheese are ordered separately here. You pick your bagel, then pick your cream cheese. The cream cheese runs about A$2.25–A$2.70 (₩2,500–₩3,000), so all up with a bagel you're looking at roughly A$4.50 to A$7.20.

They had this thing called a "Little Pang Mini Mix" — a set with bear-shaped bread rolls and heart-shaped macarons — and Mum took one look and said, "That'd be a perfect little gift." The bagel rusks and crunchy flavoured rusks were nicely packaged too, decent as a snack to take away. The everything bagels and onion bagels were piled up in baskets, and they were chunkier than I expected. Garlic bagels sat right beside them — honestly, I lost count of how many bagel varieties they had.

The cranberry choc-chip bagel was practically the size of your face. Next to it were sausage rolls and long baguette-style loaves — I'd assumed they only did bagels, but turns out they've got a solid bread range too. The croffles (croissant-waffles) were lined up as well — plain, matcha ice cream, raspberry fresh cream — and Dad looked at the whole spread and said, "Is this a cafe or a bakery?" Just browsing the display chewed up a fair bit of time, but let's move on to the cake section.

Cake Section

Past the bagels, there's a separate cake display off to the side.

The pure milk cake had these neat little peaks of white cream — looked really clean. The pistachio ice cream choux caught my eye too. The basque cheesecake had a properly dense, gooey cross-section visible, and Mum stood there staring at it for a good while. Between the chocolate cake, carrot cream cheese cake, and the rest, there's a decent slice-cake lineup, each one sitting on a branded Petra stand. The display itself felt well put-together. Prices sat around A$6.75–A$7.20 (₩7,500–₩8,000). That said, a couple of the cakes had cream that looked a bit dried out or fillings that had cracked. They're not high-turnover items like the bagels, so they might've been sitting in the display for a while — just something to keep in mind.

Inside on Levels 1 and 2 — A Mega Cafe in Daylight

We ordered our drinks and started looking for a spot, taking in the interior as we went.

Natural light was streaming in between the exposed concrete columns, and it made all the indoor plants look incredibly lush. At night, the indirect lighting gave the place a cosy, intimate feel — but during the day, sunlight pours through the glass walls and fills the entire space, completely changing the atmosphere. The green wreath decorations hanging from the second-floor railing and the potted plants dotted around looked so much more vibrant in daylight. A big tropical-plant graphic banner hanging in the centre had its colours really popping too. Down on the ground floor, there were pastel beanbags and round sofas, and Mum said, "That looks comfy over there" — but someone had already nabbed those seats.

Sofa Zone — Cushy Central Lounge

The central sofa zone on the ground floor was seriously plush. Green and beige sofas arranged in a circle with potted plants and a small tree in the middle — it felt like a little lounge tucked inside the cafe. Red and yellow cushions added a nice pop of colour. Dad wanted to sit here, but with three of us the tables were a bit low and the spacing was a tad awkward, so we ended up moving elsewhere. That said, if you're just after a leisurely coffee with no food, this'd be the comfiest spot in the house.

Window Seats — Along the Glass

Right by the windows, there was a row of wooden-frame chairs lined up. You can see the lawn and a small A-frame building outside — a view we had absolutely no idea existed when we came at night. Out on the terrace, there were white chair-and-table sets too, and on a nice day you'd be tempted to sit out there. The chairs recline back quite a bit, which is comfortable, but the table ends up a bit far away if you're trying to eat anything with your coffee. Perfect spot for just sitting and zoning out while staring at the garden, though.

Other Seating

The regular seating is brown leather round chairs paired with white tables. The backrests are pretty low — not great for leaning back — and I reckon your back would stiffen up if you sat there too long. Still, for a quick coffee it's fine, and from this angle you get a nice shot of the central garden feature and the louvre partitions behind. The tables are spaced generously enough that you're not on top of the next person, which was a definite plus. Mum sat down here and said, "It's packed but it doesn't feel cramped" — and she was right.

Overall Scale of the Place

This gives you a fair idea of just how big the place is. The ground floor alone is split into a sofa zone, standard seating, and window seats, and the ceiling is open right up to the second level so it never feels closed in. Exposed concrete columns with plants and partitions between them break the space up naturally, so even though it's massive, it doesn't feel chaotic. Mum said, "If this was my first time, I wouldn't have guessed it was a cafe" — that's how big this mega cafe actually is.

Outdoor Area — A View We Never Knew Existed

Last time we came at night, it was too dark to see what was out the back. Turns out there's a whole outdoor seating area stretching out behind the building.

Along the side of the building, white tables and mesh chairs were set out in a row, with a wide stretch of lawn right in front. There was a small A-frame building sitting on the grass too — looked like it might be a photo spot. Dad suggested we drink our coffees outside, but it was the middle of the day and there wasn't a scrap of shade. Even though it was only May, the sun was properly harsh, so we ended up heading back inside. A few umbrellas or shade sails would've gone a long way here — that was a bit of a letdown. On a mild spring or autumn evening, though, I reckon the outdoor vibe would be lovely.

The A-Frame Building — Like a Tiny Chapel

That A-frame building we spotted from the lawn — up close, it had a pink door with little pine branch decorations and an "Open" sign hanging on it. Pushed the door open and inside it was tiny, but it had this atmosphere like stepping into a small chapel. Wooden floors, a cross-shaped light fixture, candles, and a pair of old wooden chairs. Mum went in and had a good look around for ages. Not sure if you're actually meant to drink your coffee in there, but as a photo spot it was a decent little space.

What We Ordered — A Coffee with Mum and Dad

Petra iced almond cream latte topped with cocoa powder and almond slices
Petra real vanilla latte with vanilla bean specks

We got an iced almond cream latte and a real vanilla latte. You order via the kiosk, and when you select a coffee, a screen comes up to choose your beans. There are three options: Orb (nutty, smooth), Breeze (fruity acidity), and Decaf. I'm all about that nutty flavour, so I went with Orb.

The almond cream latte came topped with cocoa powder and almond slices, and the first sip had this lovely nutty, rich flavour rolling through. That was A$6.30 (₩7,000). Dad had the real vanilla latte — he said the vanilla came through nicely without being overly sweet, which suited him. That one was A$6.10 (₩6,800), bringing our total to A$12.40 (₩13,800) for two drinks. For a mega cafe, lattes around the A$6–7 mark is pretty standard these days, but the cup sizes weren't huge, so the value-for-money is a touch borderline. That said, both drinks tasted good, and Dad reckoned "not bad for the price."

We were just stopping in for a breather before heading to Gran's, but sitting there having a coffee with my parents — I couldn't remember the last time we'd done that. It was Children's Day, but honestly, shouting Mum and Dad a coffee might've been the most meaningful part of the whole day.

Final Thoughts — Go Once at Night, Once by Day

On the way out, Mum finally caved and bought one of those six-clove garlic bagels she'd been eyeing since we arrived. In the car on the way to Gran's, Dad said, "Bring the missus next time" — and yeah, next visit I'm definitely bringing the wife along.

Petra is a cafe you genuinely need to visit twice — once at night and once during the day — to get the full picture. At night, it's cosy under soft indirect lighting. During the day, natural light fills every corner and there's an entire outdoor lawn to explore, so even though it's the same mega cafe in Cheongju, it feels like two completely different experiences. The seating variety meant it was comfortable even with my parents in tow, and the bagel range is big enough that you could easily grab a few as gifts. There were a couple of minor letdowns, sure, but between the big free car park and the kiosk ordering, it's a solid pick for a family coffee stop.
